Want Less Stress? Then Worry More!
2010-06-15
What people refer to as "stress" is really their reaction to stress.  The headaches, the high blood pressure, the sleepless nights, the frayed emotions, the anger - these are what people call stress.  But they are really your reactions to stress.  And they are your reactions to "worry."  Because your mind and your body cannot distinguish between the forces on your mind and body caused by stress and those caused by worry.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN STRESS AND WORRY

See, stress is usually external.  The deadline at work. The illness causing damage to your body.  The financial problems making you stay awake at night.  These are external to you.  Worry is internal.  Worry us defined in terms of your thoughts that torture you or disturb you.  Worry doesn't come from outside.  It is your internal action, usually because of something external.

WHY THIS DIFFERENCE MATTERS

So why do I say to worry more to relieve stress?  Well, if stress is external, then it is something you can deal with.  A deadline coming up?  Figure out a plan to get everything done in time, including delegating or bringing in more people.   An illness?  Research the problem, discuss with doctors, come up with your personal plan of attack.

WHY WORRY STEALS YOUR BIGGEST STRESS FIGHTING WEAPON

And what do you need to do these things about stress?  Time.  But if you are wasting time worrying, then you are losing time to deal with the stress.  So don't waste time on worry.  Schedule it.  Focus on it.  And then move back to the fighting the stress.

SO HOW TO WORRY MORE, TO RELIEVE STRESS

See, since worrying simply internal thoughts, then find a period of time where you can focus on those worrisome thoughts.  Remember, if you are worrying all the time, your body can't tell the difference between the fear generated by the stress and the fear generated by the worry.

HOW TO WORRY THE RIGHT WAY

So pick 30 minutes - 45 if it is a big deal.  Sit down.  Worry your ass off.  Worry about everything that could go wrong, worry about what the neighbors will think, worry about how it will affect your job, your marriage, your family.  Worry and then worry some more.  And then - let it go.   Now that your 30 or 45 minutes are up, you can get back to the task of getting rid of the stress.  And you mind won't keep going back to the worrisome state, because it did it already.
